Sigurdur PALSSON

Born 30. 7. 1948 at Skinnastadur, Iceland. Studied French in Toulouse and Paris 1967-1968. Drama and literature studies in the Institut d'Etudes Théâtrales, Sorbonne, Paris 1968-1973 and again from 1978-1982, obtaining Maîtrise and D.E.A. degrees and also a diploma in cinema from C.L.C.F. Sigurdur Pálsson now works mainly as writer and translator and also as professor (University of Iceland and the Iceland Academy of the Arts).

Nominated for the Nordic Council Prize for Literature in 1993. Nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize in 1995, 2001 and finally in 2007 for Minnisbók (Notebook from Memory) for which he got the Prize. Minnisbók is a memoir of his stay in France during 1967-1982, a playful, bittersweet, funny and charming description of an époque. A new book of memoir, Bernskubók (Book of Childhood) was a huge success in 2011.

He was awarded the annual Literary Prize of the Icelandic Radio 1999 and the Booksellers' Prize for Poetry, 2001.

Pálsson has published fifteen books of poetry from 1975 to 2012. Some poems have been translated into twenty languages. Selected poems were published in French, 1993, in a bilingual edition (Poèmes des hommes et du sel) by Editions de la Différence. A selection of Pálsson’s poems was published in Bulgarian in 2005 and in Italian (with texts by two other Icelandic poets) in 2006. A selection in Spanish (Vientos y nubes) was published in 2008, a selection in Bengali and in Hindi in 2009. In 2013 were published a selection of poems in Arabic, another in Italian and still one selection in French. An extensive selection of his poems will be published in English (ARC Publications) in 2014.

Pálsson has written eleven theatre plays that have been staged from 1975 to 2008, many of them by the Reykjavik City Theatre while the two most recent ones, a much acclaimed play on the life of Edith Piaf, and Utan gátta (Off target), were put on by the Icelandic National Theatre. For the last one Pálsson got the Icelandic Theatre Prize (Gríman) as the Playwright of the Year. One libretto: "The Moonlight Island", world premiere in 1997 in Beijing. Three novels: Parísarhjól (The Big Wheel of Paris) published in 1998, Blár þríhyrningur (Blue Triangle) in 2000 and Næturstaður (Night Lodging) 2002.

Pálsson has translated twenty-five titles from French into Icelandic, works by Camus, Genet, Adamov, Arrabal, Ghelderode, Feydeau, Bailly, Queffélec, Prévert, Éluard, Carrère, Augé, Deforges, Cordelier, Châtelet, Vinaver, Anne, Kvaran and Schmitt and also two plays by Arthur Miller.

Sigurdur Pálsson was President of the Alliance Française of Iceland from 1976 to 1977. Chairman of the Writers' Union of Iceland from 1984 to 1988. He was awarded three years Honorary Stipend of the City of Reykjavik in 1987 and a Writer's Stipend from the State of Iceland several times. He was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1990 by the French Minister of Culture and Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite in 2007 by the President of France.

Pálsson travaille avant tout comme écrivain et traducteur mais enseigne également à l’Université. Il a également travaillé dans le cinéma, au théâtre et à la télévision.

Quinze recueils de poèmes publiés entre 1975 et 2012, trois romans, deux livres de mémoires ainsi qu’une dizaine de pièces de théâtre entre 1975 et 2008, les deux dernières au Théâtre National d’Islande. Ses poèmes sont traduits en une vingtaine de langues.

Publication d'une sélection de poésie en bulgare, deux en italien (2005 et 2013), une séléction en espagnol (2008, Vientos y nubes), en bengali et hindi (2009), en arabe (2013), en français (2013 trad. Régis Boyer) et en anglais (2014 trad. M. Regal).

Pálsson a traduit plus d’une vingtaine d’oeuvres du français en islandais ainsi que deux pièces d´Arthur Miller.

Sigurdur Pálsson a reçu entre autres le Prix littéraire de la Radio Islandaise en 1999 et le Prix des Libraires pour la Poésie en 2001. Il a été nominé une fois pour le Prix Nordique de Littérature et trois fois pour le Grand Prix Littéraire Islandais et l’a reçu en 2007 pour son livre de mémoires, Minnisbók – Livre de mémoire – qui parle de ses années en France de 1967-82. Grand succès en 2011 de son autre livre de mémoires, Bernskubók – Livre de l’enfance. En 2009 il a reçu le Prix Islandais du Théâtre (Gríman) comme l’Auteur Dramatique de l’Année.

Sigurdur Pálsson était président de l'Alliance Française d'Islande de 1976 à 1977 et de l'Union des Ecrivains Islandais de 1984 à 1988.

Il a été nommé Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres en 1990 et Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite en 2007.

Sigurdur Pálsson werd geboren in 1948 in Skinnastaður, IJsland. Hij studeerde aan het Instituut voor Theaterwetenschappen, Sorbonne - Nouvelle, Parijs III (Master in DEA) en hij behaalde eveneens een diploma Bioscoopstudies (CLCF).

Mr. Pálsson werkt voornamelijk als schrijver en vertaler, maar hij is ook als docent verbonden aan de Universiteit. Hij heeft ook gewerkt in de filmwereld, in het theater en voor de televisie.

Tussen 1975 en 2012 verschenen er vijftien dichtbundels van zijn hand, drie romans, twee memoires, evenals een tiental theaterstukken tussen 1975 en 2008, waarvan de twee laatste voor het Nationale Toneel van IJsland. Zijn gedichten zijn vertaald in twintig talen.

Publicatie van een select aantal poëzie-albums in het Bulgaars, twee in het Italiaans (2005 en 2013), enkele in het Spaans (2008), in het Bengali en het Hindi (2009), het Arabisch (2013), het Frans (2013 vertaling Regis Boyer ) en het Engels (2014 vertaling Mr Regal).

Mr. Pálsson vertaalde meer dan twintig werken van het Frans naar het IJslands en ook twee werken van Arthur Miller.

Sigurdur Pálsson ontving onder andere de IJslandse Literary Award in 1999 en de Radio Booksellers Award voor Poëzie in 2001. Hij werd ooit genomineerd voor de Noordse Literatuurprijs en drie keer voor de IJslandse Literaire Grote Prijs die hij ook in 2007 ontving voor zijn memoires, Minnisbók, die over over zijn jaren in Frankrijk (1967-1982) gaan. Hij kende een groot succes in 2011 met zijn memoires over zijn jeugd, Bernskubók. In 2009 ontving hij de IJslandse Theater Award (Griman) als Drama-auteur van het Jaar.

Sigurdur Pálsson was voorzitter van de Franse Alliantie van IJsland van 1976 tot 1977 en van de Unie van IJslandse Schrijvers van 1984 tot 1988.

Hij werd benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van Kunst en Letteren in 1990 en tot Ridder in de Nationale Orde van Verdienste in 2007.
