The Cricket Test
The Cricket Test
Picture a cricket match, first week at upper
school, blacks versus whites, that slight hesitation
on choosing a side, and you’re close to knowing
why I’ve been trying to master this language.
Raised as I was, some words in this argot catch
in the throat, seemingly made for someone else
(the sticking point from which all else is fixed).
We lost to a one-handed catch. After the match
our changing room was a shrine to apartheid.
When I crossed the threshold, Danny asked me why
I’d stand here when I could be there, with my kind.

Imaginez un match de cricket, première semaine
d’école secondaire, noirs contre blancs, cette légère hésitation
sur le choix de l’équipe et vous êtes sur le point de comprendre
pourquoi j’essaie de maîtriser cette langue.
Élevé comme je l’ai été, certains mots de ce jargon restent coincés
dans ma gorge, en apparence fait pour quelqu’un d’autre
(c’est le point d’accroche qui sert de référence).
Nous avons perdu d’une balle attrapée en plein vol, d’une seule main.

Als je denkt aan die cricketmatch, in je eerste week
van de hoogste klas, zwart tegen wit, aarzelend
om een kant te kiezen, dan begint het je te dagen
waarom ik deze taal probeer te beheersen.
Soms, als je jeugd je dwarszit, blijven de woorden
van dit taaltje steken in je keel, als gemaakt voor
iemand anders (en plots zit dan alles klemvast).
Een vangbal met één hand besliste over ons verlies.
