Carl Jóhan JENSEN, born in Tórshavn in 1957, is one of the most original and provocative writers on the Faroese literary scene today. Poet and novelist, Carl Jóhan Jensen is also a prominent figure in the public debate on culture and politics in the Faroe Islands. Since his publishing début in the early eighties, he has produced seven volumes of poetry, two novels, a collection of essays, as well as satirical rhymes, and he is a regular and respected reviewer of the latest in Faroese arts.
Carl Jóhan Jensen has been twice awarded the Faroese M.A. Jacobsen literature prize, and four times nominated for the prestigious Nordic Council Literature Award. Jensen’s work has appeared in literary journals and anthologies in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and the USA. His 2006 volume of poetry entitled September í bjørkum sum kanska eru bláar. The afflications of the Reverend J.H.O. Dünn, and was published in Danish translation in 2010.
Jensen’s celebrated novel Ó-: søgur um djevulskap (Sprotin, 2005) (working title in English: “Un-: Tales of Devilry”) was published in Norwegian translation in 2010 (Samlaget) to widespread critical acclaim (U-: Historier om djevelskap). It is due to appear in Icelandic translation in 2013. Carl Jóhan Jensen is currently completing his third novel, which is expected to be published in late 2013.
