Karl SEGLEM

Norwegian tenor saxophonist, goat horn player, composer, producer and poet. Called one of Norway´s foremost musicians with a unique sound, he has also developed a distinctive identity as a musician, composer and published poet. His use of goat horns and other traditional instruments - notably the Hardanger fiddle - is excitingly blended with a plethora of modern and eclectic elements: electronic loops, jazz improvisation, world music traits, rock characteristics – and poetry.
He had his debut as a published poet with the collection Stilla er ein åker (2006), followed by Kvit frekvens, stille spor (2013). Karl Seglem entices the meeting between words and sound in a lyrical landscape, interchangeably inspired by nature, mechanics, technology and urbanism. His language gives his poetry a distinctive trait, as he writes in “Nynorsk”, the other official written standard in Norway, next to “Bokmaal”. Nynorsk is made up by different Norwegian dialects, as opposed to its counterpart, which derives from Danish. An estimated 10-15% of Norwegians write in Nynorsk.
Karl Seglem has had an extensive artistic cooperation with one of Europe’s most-performed dramatists, the Norwegian playwright and novelist Jon Fosse. Together they have recorded two albums, uniting jazz, folk and poetry in a single artistic expression: Prose (1996) and Poem (2006). Moreover, Seglem has been collaborating with many of the foremost Norwegian and foreign musicians, writers, painters, filmmakers, dancers & choreographers.
In 2010, Karl Seglem received the Buddy Award, the highest Norwegian jazz award.
