Sinéad Morrissey was born in 1972, raised in Belfast and educated at Trinity College Dublin, where she read English and German and obtained her PhD degree in 2003. Though she won the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 1990 for her first volume, she destroyed that work but wrote four collections of poetry since: There Was Fire in Vancouver (1996), Between Here and There (2002), The State of the Prisons (2005) and Through the Square Window (2009), the second, third and fourth of which were shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. After periods working in Germany and teaching English in Japan where she met her husband she travelled extensively in New Zealand, the United States and China. She returned to Belfast where she now lives with her husband and two children, and works at Queen’s University, as the director of the Creative Writing Programme at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry.

Bien que son premier volume gagna le Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award en 1990, elle finit par détruire cet ouvrage. Depuis, elle a écrit quatre recueils de poésies: There Was Fire in Vancouver (Il avait le feu à Vancouver 1996), Between Here and There (Entre ici et là, 2002), The State of the Prisons (L’état des prisons 2005) and Through the Square Window (A travers la fenêtre carrée 2009). Après avoir travaillé en Allemagne et enseigné l’anglais au Japon, où elle a rencontré son mari, elle a longtemps voyagé en Nouvelle Zélande, aux Etats Unis et en Chine. De retour à Belfast, elle y vit avec son mari et ses deux enfants et y dirige le programme de création littéraire du Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry à la Queen’s University.

Ze publiceerde verder vier dichtbundels, allen bij Carcanet: Er was Vuur in Vancouver (1996), Tussen Hier en Ginder (2002), De Staat van de Gevangenissen (2005) en Door het Vierkante Raam (2009). Voor de drie laatste bundels was ze genomineerd voor de T.S. Eliot Prijs. Na een tijd in Duitsland gewerkt te hebben ging ze een paar jaar Engels onderrichten in Japan waar ze haar man leerde kennen. Ze reisde verder nog naar Nieuw-Zeeland, de Verenigde Staten en China. Ze keerde naar Belfast terug waar ze nu woont met haar echtgenoot en twee kinderen en ook werkt: ze is directeur van het Master programma in Creatief Schrijven aan het Seamus Heaney Centrum voor Poëzie in Queen’s University.
