Tallinna südalinn on ilus. Sääl, kus Estonia teater,
ja vana pangamaja (kust vabariik kuulutati) ja Reaalkool.
Ainult üks kaubakeskus laiutab üle tee nagu pommiauk. Sääl,
selles koolis, oleme me käinud. Mu vanaisa lõpetas 1947, N-Liidus.
Saksa okupatsiooni ajal, '42, oli ta endale ostnud Kalevipoja-lipuvarda,

Le centre de Tallinn est beau. Avec le théâtre Estonia,
l'ancienne Banque d'Estonie (où fut proclamée la République) et le Lycée.
Seul un grand magasin s'étale de l'autre côté de la rue, tel un cratère de bombe.
C'est le lycée où nous sommes allés. Mon grand-père en est sorti en 1947, c'était l'URSS.
Sous l'occupation allemande, en 42, il s'était acheté une hampe de drapeau « Kalevipoeg »,
qui porte aujourd'hui encore le bleu-noir-blanc. J'y ai étudié à l'époque soviétique,
et c'est l'étude qui m'a rendu libre. Ma fille n'a pas connu cet Empire du mal. Fille d'un âge
libre et d'une école libre. Le pire, aujourd'hui, c'est ce grand magasin de l'autre côté de la rue.

Downtown Tallinn is beautiful. Over there, by Estonia Theater and the
old bank (where independence was proclaimed) and the secondary school.
Just one shopping center stretches like a bomb crater across the road. Over there,
that school, is where we attended. My grandfather graduated in '47, in the USSR.
During German occupation, in '42, he bought himself a Kalevipoeg flag holder:
Estonia's tricolor is planted in it even today. I went to school in Soviet times
and studied myself free. My daughter hasn't seen that despotism. A child of
free time and school. The most frightful thing now is that shopping center across the way.

De binnenstad van Tallinn is fraai. Daar, bij het Estonia-theater,
en het oude bankgebouw (waar de republiek werd uitgeroepen) en de middelbare school.
Maar aan de overkant van de straat ligt nu een winkelcentrum als een bomkrater. Op die school
daar hebben we gezeten. Mijn grootvader slaagde er in 1947, in de Sovjet-Unie.
Tijdens de Duitse bezetting, in '42, kocht hij een vlaggenstok van onze oude held Kalevipoeg,
de blauw-zwart-witte vlag hangt nog altijd aan diens speer. Ik ging in de Sovjettijd naar school
en heb me vrij geleerd. Mijn dochter heeft dat rijk van het kwaad niet gezien. Een kind van
vrije tijd en een vrije school. Het ergste is nu dat winkelcentrum aan de overkant.
